...today I bought a mechanic's stethoscope. Wish me luck!
A few points:
No AC; also removed the other AC pulley off the crank pulley when I took the AC out - at any rate, this is a pretty new engine. I replaced just about everything on it when I put it together in May/June. New timing chain, new tensioner, new chain guides (EXCEPT the one on top of the valve cover) - checked all of this stuff again, of course. Tranny is a 91+ factory rebuild that's about 2 years old now. Lesee...Swedish Dynamics poly alternator bushings - I think these may be suspect. Have to double check those too, alternator is sitting at a slight angle. What I didn't do when I did the engine was to get a new water pump...soooo...oh, and exhaust rattle - not that, it's much more mechanical of a noise, if you know what I mean. Exhaust is good too though.
Thanks again for all the suggestions. I'm off to try my new stethoscope!
