The saga continues. On Friday I stopped at my local independant Saab shop and posed my non-operation top problem - motor runs, top doesn't move. They admitted that they have little experience with mal-functioning tops so I was lent the Saab Factory manual section for the Convertible. That book says that the fluid should be at the fill hole (not at the top of the 2 marks on the reservoir!) and also, to end questions as to what fluid to use, right in the 'official Saab manual' it says that 10W non-detergent engine oil may be used! I bought some oil, topped up the reservoir to the fill plug, turned the by-pass valve in the trunk to the 'power' position, crossed my fingers and pressed the 'up' button - and...the motor whirred but there was no motion in the top. I then manually raised the top to the fully up position, closed the by-pass valve and the motor, with help from my pushing did move the top to the closed position, it would not move the top without my help. I took a very careful look at both cylinders and the by-pass valve, no apparent leaking anywhere. By the way, with the by-pass valve closed I tried to manually close the top, I could not budge it, steady pressure would not allow even a minor bit of motion, this seems to indicate that there is no leaking in either of the cylinders or the by-pass valve?! So, my guess is the pump has in someway failed. The Factory Manual is silent on this subject, heck it doesn't even cover any 'real' trouble shooting beyond 'if it doesn't work replace this or that...'. So what I want to do is check the output pressure of the pump but I have no knowledge as to what pressure a 'good' pump should produce. As well, I'm not sure of where a pressure gauge should be connected and what should be disconnected from the pump. I'm presuming that a bad cylinder would show up if I connected a pressure gauge in-line with each of the 'up' and 'down' lines of each cylinder, in turn, and if one of those shows a maximum pressure that is less than the others then this would indicate a faulty seal in that cylinder, in that direction of operation. So, after all these words my questions are: "What thread are the pump's fittings and what operating pressures should the pump produce?" Any other ideas or suggestions will be gratefully received, I don't want to purchase a new motor/pump ($US199) just to find that it was not the problem!
