1. Have it checked out by a Saab Tech so you know ahead of time what repairs to anticipate or need fixing promptly. Best one-hour-labor-charge you'll ever spend.
2. You can save a lot of grief if you can fix small stuff yourself. Old cars = niggling little problems - fix those yourself. Buy a Bentley manual for ~$45.
3. The 8valve 900S's are such nice little cars, and really rugged. As you get it fixed up and "tight" again, you will surely fall in love with the 900 ride/handling, though you'll find the power to be modest if also spunky when you get to know her better. Ah, definetly 5speed... I haven't driven an auto 900 but they are universally poo poo'ed as sluggish.
4. Be aware that at that age many of the cars "useful lifespan" parts are being replaced - the car can be reborn of course but at a cost. So, again, have a Saab Tech evaluate the car.
