Nervous newbie exhaust follow-up

Thanks for advice, Dan, Andrew, MS. I decided to tackle the project myself after all. At this point I have taken the system completely off, and removed the middle pipe from the cat conv. I used MS's method... I put the car up, and used a dremel tool with cutoff wheel to cut most of the way through the middle pipe, about 10" behind the cat conv. Then I removed the nuts that hold the front pipe to the exhaust header. I removed the O2 connectors, and dropped the exhaust at this end. Then I used the dremel tool to finish severing the middle pipe. Then I cut the rubber hangers to get the rest of the system down. I had to hack off the tail pipe where it attaches to the muffler to get the damn thing out from under the car! Then I removed the front pipe and cat conv. I hack-sawed through the four bolts and removed the end of the middle pipe from the cat conv. Woohoo! I also removed two bolts holding on the heat shield.

So now all I have to do is find the screws holding on the heatshield from inside, and install the new system. I have to order a new heat-shield, though.

I live in a condo, and was using the loading bay to do the work in. I got kicked out so someone could move some stuff, and had to push the car to the steet. It is completely withoiut exhaust and O2 sensor. I don't want to try it, but how bad is it to start it in that condition?? I'm plannig to just push it back to finish it when the heat shield comes in.

Also the joint between the front pipe and cat conv looks pretty rusty. Should I try to fix it up, or just leave it as is?
