I've experienced both bearing failure as well as rotor dust shield problems. In the latter, one of the three small bolts unscrewed itself and fell into the hub, rattled around, then wedged itself in a place so that it would screech and grind. Nice. And I've seen the wheel bearings themselves, large round steel balls. If one starts to go bad, it's usually pretty obvious. Lots of predictable noise.
