This is a fine technique if you aren't pulling out of a toll booth with a Suburban on your butt. Or doing a lot of stop and go in heavy traffic. I find that with the type of driving I do, I can't double shift.
So, one technique that I always use is, when shifting up, allow the gearshift to linger in neutral for a moment, then shift into the next gear. In other words, don't go directly from, say, 3rd to 4th by just throwing the shifter downward, but go from 3rd, to the middle, then to 4th, sort of a zig-zag.
This allows the synchros to adjust a little bit longer, and makes for a very smooth shift. Mechanics have told me that this makes the tranny last longer. I have no evidence to prove this is true, except for their observations. But so far, 134K on the original tranny, and going strong....
