you surmise correctly. A clean air filter goes a long way toward the engine easily drawing air from where it should. I also restored a classic (1982) 900T last winter and it too needed heaps of work to get it running in peak stock condition. It had so many oil leaks for so long that the engine was coated with a thick layer of baked oil and grime. The air filter probably hadn't been changed in years. Sitting in a thick pool of oil, it was completely soaked with black oil and caked with dirt. The hose that ran from the valve cover was completely filled with hardened congealed oil! That's how much oil was sucked through that hose, then hardened by heat over time, until it could suck no more! With a turbo car, what happens when the engine can't breathe normally, it not only draws through the valve cover, but the turbo unit itself. This engine was a dirty oily uncared for mess. (that it would even start was the amazing part. But it did, and that's why I bought it) There was even oil throughout the cabin. The shift rod that runs through the floorboard has a rubber seal around it normally. Well, this car had a ruptured seal, so that meant oily engine compartment air was drawn into the cabin via that hole. As a result, from front to rear the carpeting and the padding beneath it were thoroughly soaked with oil. I had to replace the entire interior. Overall, the cleanup was immense. I had to completely dismantle and clean all the engine components and the engine block just to see where the leaks originated. Fortunately, they were all logical places (turbo oil feed and return line gaskets, oil cooler hoses)and nothing serious to remedy. Good luck with your restoration.
