First off, I doubt it's the ABS. The ABS works by removing pressure from the brake cylinders - essentially, it can keep the brake from braking, but it can't initiate braking all by itself.

Are both sides being worn down, or just one side? From the line 'rear wheels', I assume it's both sides. About all that comes to mind that can affect both sides at the same time is the parking brake. If the rear pads are dragging, they'll get hot, and if they get hot enough, that can cause the pistons to get sticky and not let the pads retract.

With the parking brake off and a rear tire jacked off the ground, it should spin pretty freely. You should be able to pull the parking brake up at least three clicks before turning the wheel is very hard.

There is an allen (7mm?) adjustment screw on the back of the caliper used to retract the piston. It's hidden behind a bolt head. I assume you used that to retract the piston to get the pads in. The instructions say to screw it in some until the pads touch, then back it out a little, but maybe you want to back it out a bit more.

Other possiblities are water contamination in the brake lines. It's possible both rear calipers are sticky. You can either rebuild or replace them with rebuilts. If you don't have records as to when the brake fluid was last flushed, flush the brake fluid. It should be done every 2 to 3 years. Brake fluid captures moisture, and that moisture tends to work its way out to the calipers. If the calipers get hot, that water expands, which extends the piston, which gets things hotter, and so on.

If the parking brake isn't binding, flushing the system is a good next step. If it continues, you may have to replace or rebuild the rear calipers.
