I realize snow isn't as common in NC as it is here in New England, but it does occur, and I'll bet the folks there are less prepared. Around here, the great majority of vehicles I see in the ditch are SUVs. Yes, they make up a large part of the vehicle population, but that doesn't explain the flocks of them in ditches, fetched up backwards against guardrails, and humping telephone poles.

SUVs seem to give people the two things they need least of in slippery conditions - a feeling of invincibility and the ability to get out of their driveways. 4WD gives these folks the ability to go, but it hasn't added anything to their ability to control or stop.

I've always thought that 4WD was one of the worst things for winter driving. In the old days, it took some skill to get a car going in slippery conditions. If you didn't have that skill, at least you stayed put. Now folks can get their 2.5 tons of sheet metal and cupholders up to speed in all conditions, but that doesn't mean they have the ability to keep it going in a straight line, or figure how to turn it when the road curves. Physics still holds true, and big and heavy won't turn well, and even less so when the tires and road have some ice between.

The next time you get an inch or three of snow, check the ditches for Chevy Subdivisions and Ford Excretions.
