Center console swap....

Is it possible to swap the center (ignition) console from a later model 900 like 87 or so (I'm not sure when they changed) into an early 900 ('81). Isn't there somekind of mount on the back that's attached to the body? On mine the whole thing is attached by 3 screws. 2 in front, one in middle. I need the wider console for the bigger shift boot base. Thanks!
