As noted already, the 10-40 is thicker than the stock 10-30 trans oil and will not be better in cold weather as you have noticed. First, you won't damage anything with the 10-40 oil, unless you try to shift too fast and grind the gears repeatedly. But you should switch to a lighter oil. What will definately help in cold weather is Redline MTL, Honda synthetic manual trans fluid, or Amsoil(don't know weight, but they have an appropriate fluid). This is not an additive but completely replaces the wrong oil that is now in your trans. Redline MTL is available at some parts stores for around $8/qt., especially performance oriented shops. The Honda stuff is at Honda dealers and is reported to be a little chaper. I'd call around and buy 3 quarts of Redline or Honda. Then go back to the shop and ask them to substantiate the $180 charge for a ten minute job and ask them why they put in 10-40 oil when it is wrong. If they don't offer to refund about $150 and put the redline in for free, I would find another shop that will do it for no more than $50. If you have time and are not prone to violence, you can go to small claims court for your money back or just file a Better Business Bureau complaint.
