I saw this car your talking about on e-bay a few days ago. It's the same exatce car I bought 3-4 months ago.
Mine 1993 900T, 140K miles. One owner and very good condition. I saw only 2-3 things about mine that needed attection. 1. New windshiels cause the one on there had 3-4 stone chips in it. 2. cruise contro didn't work. 3. The passengers seat had the classic twist when trying to move the upper part. This could be fixed for $32 bucks and eeuroparts.com has the parts, and I can do the work over the weekend.
Mine is red and grey leather. very clean for my standards.
Bottom line is I got it off the guy for $2,800 out the door. He wanted $3,000 even but, I told him I wanted to used the $200 to get the windshield replaced. He was basiclly like, that's cool...
I have since had all these items fixed eoither by myself, or souced out the work. Still I don't have more than $3,500 in the entire car. She(it) runs very well and has since been troubnle free. I got lucky though cause I didn't have to travel(guy selling car works on base where I also work-we're both military) For the same price though I may have traveled a 1000 miles but, again I got lucky. If this person would take into account that you'll need to make the trip perhaps he/she/they will take that price off of the cars price. That will make it even more attractive for you. I don't know, I'm with you when you say 1000 miles is a long way to go when you aren't serious or it turnd out to be a POS? but, when I was a little younger(30 yrs now) I was also really game for the whole "ROAD TRIP" stuff as well. In the end though I side with Matt VW and I'd do what he suggest. That's just me cause like him I'm probably just carzy like that!!!
