on the 4xx highways 100kph is the MAXIMUM "legal" speed. Most of the 4xx roads are built for speeds higher than that but back in the mid-seventies the maximum speed was downgraded to save gas during the oil crunch, the US imposed the "double nickle" or 55mph limit at the same time. Most states, after much lobbying by the trucking industry and others, have since upped the maximum speed. Ontario has not. However, most seasoned Highway Ontario Provincial Police officers tend to 'look the other way' if you exceed this limit (unless you are being a total idiot). Try driving 401 at 100kph and you are just a rolling roadblock most of the time! Steady state (cruise controlled) driving on the open road yields fantastic mileage in my 1987 T900C but slow down for one traffic jam and the bottom drops out! Warm, humid weather also helps the mileage (kilometerage??).
