Throttle Position Sensor may have gone bad. I had the same problem on my '88 900S a few years ago. The TPS is a black plastic switch on the opposite side of the throttle body from the throttle bellcrank. Pull the connector off the top and use an ohmmeter or continuity tester see if you get continuity between pins 1 & 3 (IIRC) when the throttle is closed. You should hear a click from the switch when the throttle closes to indicate that it's adjusted properly. Sometimes they get some crud (highly technical term) in them that keeps the throttle from closing fully, too.
If there's no continuity when the throttle is closed, the switch either needs to be adjusted or replaced.
