I agree, distortion kills speakers, not power... Quality speakers can handle far more cleanly amplified power than their ratings usually indicate.
You can kill large, high-power-rated speakers with a little crappy amplifier turned way up- distorting, clipping, and sending DC current through the speaker coil, causing eventual meltdown.
On the other hand, I've seen guys at a high-end stereo shop hook up a bookshelf set of Paradigm speakers with 50W power ratings to a high-quality (Hafler perhaps?) 250wRMS per channel amplifier. The speakers survived just fine.
