I replaced the engine on my '85 900, and will have it running in a couple weeks. I am going to be commuting 100 miles roundtrip for 5 weeks, 5 days a week, taking summer classes at my college and living at home. Well I had never done anything remotely as difficult as replacing an engine before. I had done brake jobs and stuff. Well the car seems to have made it through the transfer okay, but now my father is asking me to not plan on driving the car for long drives, especially summer school.

The thing is I am not sure if I can trust that I didn't screw something up, or that the car is just getting old and something stupid will break. It has 160k miles, 90k miles on the engine and manual trans.

I like to think that I could figure out anything that goes wrong while Im out on the highway. My previous Saab that died of rust (and became the donor car for my '85) I actually cut up with a grinder just out of curiousity. I cut the car in two peices, straight down the door jambs, across the roof and floor, and ripped everything apart. So now I know where everything is in the car, wiring, important modules and pumps and electronics and stuff. I just dont know what types of things are going to break on this car eventually.

Maybe you car guys here carry special tools with you "just in case" something goes wrong with a repair? I have all the spare parts from my old Saab boxed up (computers, electronics, all those relays and stuff) so keeping those in a box in the back of the car is probably a good idea, and maybe the alternator and starter from my donor car also.

You know what I mean? Now that my car has become my personal fix-it-upper hobby, can I rely on it? If I carry tools with me, maybe I actually have an advantage?
