Strange Alternator Problem

Since we bought our 1991 900 six months ago, we've certainly discovered a few quirks with the car.
One problem is that the wire loop (sorry for the lack of technical description) that attaches to the side of the alternator slips off. This happened twice -both times when we were on the highway and then the typical dead alternator symptoms. When our mechanic looked at the car, he told us it wasn't the alternator but that the simple connection had come undone. The second occurrence happened this week. Does anyone know why this is slipping off? What can I use to clamp this down?
Thanks,
Bruce
