cracked exhaust manifold

ok guys here is a newbie question:
I suspect there is a cracked exhaust manifold in my 900 T '91. The reason I suspect this is that I smell exhaust fumes until the car warms up at which time the smell disappears which leads me to think that the crack closes up as the metal parts expand with heat. The smell is no problem, but are there any long term consequences if I don't fix the manifold? Is a cracked exhaust manifold a source of power loss at all? and what are my options for fixing? Does the entire thing have to be replaced or can I 'fill' the crack with something?
thanks
