I would replace the shift rod seal before I installed the transmission in the car. They are only a few bucks and should be relatively easy to replace with the transmission out of car. It is a real pain when it is in car. I had to take most of the console and shifting mechanism out to get new seal to go in straight. You can lose a lot of oil out of there if it leaks. Do it now.
