The link RS sent is the first part of the story of my struggles with the O2 sensor. The second part of that story is in the same series, so make sure you scroll down and read Part II. It =did= have a happy ending.

Since posting that I learned a few more things about taking out the O2 sensor. Several people reported that they'd struggled mightily with theirs, then gave up, drove it to a Saab mechanic, and with one pull on a medium sized wrench (to the owner's utter astonishment) the sensor came out. Well, that's because the sensor was mad hot after the drive to the shop, and not because the mech knew any magical technique or had just the right tool.

I sort of mentioned in my post that the cast aluminum of the exhaust elbow has a different coefficient of thermal expansion than the steel casing and threads of the sensor. What that means is the sensor is really tight in there when it's cold and looser when the whole assembly is hot. Next time I change mine, I'll take the car for a drive first, and then remove it when it's still smoking hot. My mistake last time was tackling the job in the morning after the car had cooled overnight.

Heating the elbow with a torch is not a good idea, as the heat is very uneven... if you can heat it in an oven, that would work better. But of course, no oven is going to get it as hot as it gets from just being on the engine with hot exhaust gasses flowing through it.
