Speedometer worked fine so I knew it wasn't the cable...
I took it apart & found a gear loose on its shaft. Peened it a bit to tighten, put it back on, works great now. I never found anything resembling instructions for this, even the factory shop manuals simply tell how to remove it from the car.
If you've ever repaired a camera or a clock, there's nothing to worry about (haha ;-) It's a bit tricky to put the digit wheels back together so pay close attention when you take them apart.
One caution... Speedo needle has to come off the shaft. Carefully flex it over the stop-post, so you can mark its location for when you put it back on. Otherwise its a big trial&error game to get it back in the right place.
Remember, if you screw it up, all you have to do is replace it from a junkyard & you're not really any worse off then if you hadn't tried in the first place.
