Depends on what is your ultimate goal. If it is to fix and sell, then that is very tough. But if you are going to fix and drive, I say go for it. I have just about finished restoring my 86 SPG. I hesitate to add up all the expenses, but I still think it is a lot less than a new car or payments on one. Here is a short list of what I've done so far:
steering rack
harmonic balancer + new belts
timing chain tensioner
A/C compressor, evap, condenser, receiver-dryer, hoses (basically all new)
clutch pedal, clutch master cylinder
ball joints, cv joints, tie rod ends
alignment
All of the above was probably around $2K total.
Then I've replaced the following with performance items:
SPG9 stage 2 box, RRFPR, AID, slotted rotors, pads
All new silicone vacuum lines
Blaupunkt speakers, CD receiver, amp
K&N filtercharger
E code headlights
Red powder coated valve cover + gasket + oil guides
All of this was prob another $2k, although some of the SPG9 stuff came off my 86 turbo.
I just sent the car out for minor body work and a new paint job - $1700
Add that to the $600 I paid for the car and I guess I have $6.5K in a car that might be worth $4K with the new paint job.
But....I love driving it and it has been pay as I go - no car payments and lots of fun wrenching.
My $.02
Jim
