Ever hear of a transmission lock? Posted by IrieTom [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: spg start up, bob d, Sun, 28 Apr 2002 20:59:44 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
One of the most commonly mentioned "quirks" in SAABs is the fact that the ignition switch is located on the floor. There are a number of advantages to this including ergonomics (it's easy to reach and visible) and safety (you don't dismember your knee in a crash.)
The underlying "quirk" which caused the ignition lock to be placed on the floor was engineered because the SAAB company didn't want to put a steering lock on their cars. They didn't want to trade safety for theft prevention, so they decided to have the ignition switch lock the transmission into reverse instead of the typical steering lock. Early SAABs had a column-mounted shifter, so the ignition switch was located on the steering column. When the SAAB 99 was introduced, the gear shift lever had been moved to the floor- and the ignition lock followed.
The transmission is locked into reverse gear whenever the key is removed from the ignition. If the car isn't in reverse, you can't remove the key.
I'm not sure about newer SAABs- I know that the 9000 series has steering locks (and ignition switches on the steering column), and the 9-3s have the ignition on the floor. I'm not sure whether or not the 9-3s have steering or transmission locks.
