Beats the snot out of me when one is appropriate versus the other. My *guess* is that anything that it going to be exposed to road debris *needs* to be metal to minimize the risk of a punture or rip. If nothing else, I'd buy stainless steel braided hose for runs under the car and not plain ol' rubber. But, you can buy bulk steel fuel line and the bending/flaring tool for not that much money. Do a search over on the Sonett BBS for fuel line - there was a discussion there a few months ago on this very subject.
