after reminicing about about my previous car, a 1990 e34 525i with a 5 speed and the m20 2.5L inline 6 motor, i realised something about my 1991 900S 3dr 5spd.
My 900S is never slow... its got the 2.1L motor (140hp) It always gives me a confident feeling at all RPM's. even at basicly idle the engine has strong power, and it has increasing power all the way to 3500. then it feels like the powergain is stable till about 4500 and it starts to climb again. In my BMW i would always have to struggle with the engine to get into traffic from a stop...the low RPM power was simply non-existant. Once it reached 3500rpm things got good, and then at 4700-6800 the car was a rocket. This really sucked cause you cant start out at 4700RPM....well i guess you could....like twice(lol). traffic was a nightmare. NOT SO with the 900S, it pulls like a champ into traffic. Albeit its peak acceleration cant touch my 525i but over the entire range of engine speed its a far better prefomer. I think this was saab's plan. and still is. I remember them advertising my moms 9-5's "usable power" (207lb.ft. at 1800-3600RPM)
I attributed this to the saab's DOHCs with 4 valves per cylinder vs the BMW's SOHC with 2 valves per cylinder. but that assumption was destroyed when i drove my friends 1994 325is 5 speed. This was equipped with the m50 motor (the replacement for the m20) which had DOHC and 4 valves percylinder. Not to mention VANOS intake side variable valve timing.
This car was still horrible at the low RPM's....it's something serious at high RPMs though... I'd trust an engine like this for getting onto the autobahn with a shot onramp. not for getting into a car and a half gap in 45mph traffic.
the two cars are really different(525vs.900). Both having their strenghts and weaknesses.
i like the 900's power delivery, and all the things different about its powertrain...*backwards, sideways, and on top of the transmission* I love when car companies do things different than the convention, even if its not as good (maybe why i love saab)
unfortunatly the 525's manual transmission makes the 900's feel like a (long wooden spoon in a bowl of oatmeal) *someone elses quote* and the cluth was so much more precise it bothers me to think about it.
Otherthan that they are about equill....only difference from here being quality and durability, the interior construction of the BMW surpassed the saab. and the engine of the BMW felt and sounded alot more durable than the SAAB. and finaly i didnt feel like i was going to break the transmision on my BMW. THANKS ALOT GM.
