Hi Dennis.

Here's my theory - hopefully I can explain it clearly.

The male-threaded end of the hydraulic cylinder rod has about 1/2 inch of threads. The eye-bolt was threaded all the way on to this rod (based on what I found after it broke into two pieces), but the female threads in the eye-bolt are about 3/4 inch deep, and the hole extends a little further than the threads. It seems that having the rod thread in to 1/2 inch only may allow for a bending stress in the eye bolt at that location. The eye bolt did indeed break off at the point where the rod ended inside it. For clarity, the part of the eyebolt that remained threaded on the rod could be described as a female threaded tube, 1/2 inch long. The surface of the fracture suggests that some fatigue had taken place before the final rupture, although inspection of the other eye bolt (on the driver's side) does not indicate any fractures in progress. [I suppose it's possible that some of the the rough fracture surface was damaged immediately following rupture.] Note that the OEM eyebolt apprears to be made of a lower quality aluminum - it looks like what I've heard described as "pot" metal - and a welder where I work was hesitant to try brazing it and said the threads would be destroyed in the process anyway. A person at that hydraulic cylinder company that you suggested in an earlier post asked me if the part had split in two along the mold line. I told him "no, it was a circular break". He said many of these eyebolts are made of plastic and split into two similar halves.

Anyway - hope this is helpful. The part that I bought at McMaster is definitly stronger than the OEM part, so I may replace the driver's side just as a precaution.

Regards,
Charles
