If anything killed your master cylinder, it was the old brake fluid already in there, *not* the Castrol you added to it. Changing it regularly will help prevent brake component failure.

You noted that the fluid was so low that your light came on - this should be your biggest clue that there is some leak and the condition existed *before* you added the Castrol.

Someone with more experience will likely be able to tell you more about the condition you're experiencing, though if you don't see any obvious leaks, your assumption about the master cylinder dying would also be mine.
