First and second gear wouldnt engage

As I was leaving a gas station yesterday, the shifter wouldnt go into first or second gear. I finally was able to man-handle it down into second gear by pulling it very hard. From then on, it has been fine. I know the previous owner really drove this car spiritedly. So is this the synchros going? How much longer does the transmission have?
Thanks,
Rob
