It can be fixed ... Posted by RS [Email] (#15) [Profile/Gallery] (more from RS) on Tue, 4 Jun 2002 12:41:52 In Reply to: Odometer, Brian, Tue, 4 Jun 2002 12:17:30 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
There's a gear that shrinks, cracks, and loses its grip on the shaft that actuates the odometer. If you have an '88 or earlier, you can pull it and take off the rear cover to access the gear. Maybe red loctite or thick cyanoacrylate will keep the gear from turning. People used to melt the gear a bit to get it to grip (this has been a longstanding problem with SAAB speedos!)
If you have an '89 or later, I believe that you have to take the indicating needle off to get to the inner workings of the speedo to access the gear.
I'm hoping that I can swap in the speedo of my '88 into my '89, but I don't want to get into the process if there's some incompatibility.
