Ian, this is exactly the behavior I experienced when I first installed a a/f gauge (autometer). The meter would cycle lean-to-stoich at idle and would never indicate rich even under full boost. If any accessory like wipers or headlights were on, the gauge would practically cease functioning. My digital VOM indicated that the mixture was correct so I knew the car was behaving properly. I fixed it by grounding the gauge to the same ground point as the O2 sensor (it had previously been grounded behind the dash). Now it cycles perfectly at idle, rich-to-lean. It indicates rich under boost and is unaffected by headlights, wipers etc. I must give credit where it is due: I found an obscure post by Jeff Cunningham on the performance board that led me to the answer...thanks Jeff.

I ran the ground wire from the a/f meter straight to the lifting lug on the cylinder head, which is the ground point for the O2 sensor (and many other things). I just checked the wiring diags in Bentley and the 1986 model grounds at the same point. Please try it, I'm sure your mixture is fine and it is simply the gauge wiring that is causing this behavior. I suspect that there are others who have this problem and do not realize it so please post back and tell us the results!
