Hi, Jim
I converted my Saab from R-12 to R-134a in April. The link below has my posts (make sure you read parts 1 and 2) on the whole job. When I did mine, I replaced my compressor, because my compressor clutch was bad. The job will be a lot easier for you if you're keeping your old compressor, but I'd still recommend you replace your filter/drier and expansion valve. You can order them from Sobstory or one of the other Saabnet sponsors.
The larger diameter hose going into your compressor from the evaporator unit (under the hood vent slots) is the low pressure side. It gets cold when the compressor's running. The smaller diameter hose which goes from the compressor down to the front of the car (condenser and filter drier) is the high pressure side, and it gets hot when the compressor's running.
I got great results with my conversion. I live in Florida, and the system works as well or better than it did last year with R-12 in it... maybe as well as it did when new.
