Give the top of you dash a slap and if the lights come back on, it's a bad contact between the bulb holder and the plastic printed circuit(not just ground, +12 volt, too). If not, chances are it's bulbs. Either way, replace with 3 watt (21xx??), not 5 watt 194's. Loose connections are caused by excessive heat from 5 watt bulbs that will eventually melt little dimples into the plastic instrument carrier. These can be filled in with JB weld. The bulb holder springs can also be cleaned and bent slightly to provide a better contact. Give shot of WD40 to finish. All of this can be done through the speaker hole.
If none of this works, you might have a break in the printed circuit. Breaks can be repaired with the conductive paint that is used to repair rear window defogger "wires." Other wiring problems are possible and you need to get the meter out to track them down.
