The alternator brackets should have rubber bushings. These must have rotted & fallen apart, leaving the alternator a bit loose. Sometimes the ground wire from the alternator housing to the engine is also loose/bad/gone, so when somebody replaces the bushings now the alternator has no ground & quits working. Check that out.
Like they said, search this board about the heater valve. Most postings will be about the heater control valve which lives under the dashboard & likes to leak on the driver's feet. On some cars (yours) there is also another valve sitting close to the alternator which wasn't a real swift idea. Many people have just removed it & gone to the older hoses. One into the firewall & one out.
