My gauge drops gradually, just like yours, but does not go completely to zero. I think even a small amount of pressure will keep the lines full of fuel.
I had the same problem as you when I put in a new fuel pump on a 90 900t several years ago. I was confused by the Bentley check valve instructions. I first tried the new pump without putting in a separate check valve. Result was long crank times as the system came up to pressure.
I seem to remember Bentley discussing a return line check valve which confused me. Anyway, when I put the elbow check valve into the supply line, no more crank delay. Is it possible that you put the valve into the return line instead?
