bubbling coolant reservoir, smoke from engine, help!

My girlfriend pulled into the driveway today in her 91Turbo, shut the car off and then noticed smoke squeezing out from under the hood right next to her drivers side rearview door mirror. She called me and i chugged over in my 89base and saw that the coolant reservoir was by now empty with a little juice still bubbling at the bottom. Based on the spray of the coolant, it looked like it had all boiled out through the cap... WHAT could cause this!?!? thermostat? water pump (there was no odd noises or anything)
ANY HELP would be greatly appreciated, i would love to be the hero in this story =)
