AC won't function -- reasonable to fix?

I realized that this is probably a very common question, so I apologize if this post is a little redundant.

I just purchased a used '86 900 SPG and find that the AC won't turn on. The previous owner (owned it since new and took very good care of it) says that it always worked for him. I'm trying to figure out if I can fix it myself without purchasing $100s in tools and guages.

Here's what I've diagnosed so far: (1) I noticed some oil under the hood right above the compressor the day after I purchased it but I can't see it anymore and (2) when I jumped the wires at the rec/dryer, the compressor starts right up. I'm assuming the problem is low-to-no freon and I'm guessing that it leaked out rather quickly (hence the oil on the hood) which may indicate the compressor seals are bad (I suppose it could be a hose, but it's almost definitely not a slow pinhole leak).

What should I do? The car obviously isn't worth enough to put $1000 into AC repair (plus I live in PA, so it's not impossible to get by without it). How much work is it to replace the compressor seals? Is it possible to just recharge (or convert to R134) and hope the system will hold?
