I had a 1984 900 that used to stall completely dead at odd intervals with no prior indication of trouble. As I coasted to the side of the road, I'd turn the key and it would fire right up again. My problem turned out being degraded insulation on the electrical wires allowing the electrical system to ground out against the block whenever a cetain exposed wire swung to close to the engine. Disconnect the battery and look around for degraded insulation on electrical wires. You'll know it when you find it. The insulation crumbles between your fingers.
