Alternator belt (two?) and awful noises

Started up my `89 900 (16V, no turbo, yes AC) this morning and it made an awful noise (man, I hate those awful noises). Shut it off and popped the hood and found the remnants of a belt loose under there.

It's the front of the two belts on the alternator pulley. I can't see exactly what it went to from there but it appears to go to the same big pulley as the other on the alternator. Is that the water pump? I am a relatively new Saab driver. When I bought the puppy it I dreaded messing with the belts on a backwards engine. Now I get to dive in.

I restarted it. Everything appeared to be spinning properly. The car seems to be charging and cooling and steering as it should. Is that belt redundant? Let's hope so, I was late to be somewhere and I drove it.

I welcome any input. What does that belt do? Should I be driving it? Any tips on replacing the belts on these backward beasts without pulling the engine, removing the firewall, or suddenly getting really skinny forearms?
