Wow. I had installed a rebuit turbo a year ago. It was successful. Then at some point a couple of months later I noticed I hardly had any boost. I didn't have time or wasn't in the mood or both, so I let it go. I figured it was the wastegate sticking or some such thing. When I finally got to it a couple weeks ago, everything I did pointed to a bad turbo. But I still had base boost and could hear that good old turbine whine. Plus I really didn't want it to be the turbo. So I kept checking APC, etc. - It all checked out. Finally I popped of a duct and peaked in - YIKES!! A nut was sitting there next to the compressor wheel. The fins on said compressor wheel were now so much aluminum dust spread throughout my ductwork. Where it came from (the nut) is a mystery, because I had all ductwork off and well cleaned during the original repair.

To make a short story long, I was sick. The first time I did the turbo it took weeks, because I had to cut a nut off, my dremel tool fried, I repaired it, it fried again, etc. I did not relish getting into it again. But I dug in. One hour later the turbo was in my grateful hands. I was astonished how much easier it was the second time around. I sent it back to Swedish Dynamics, and they shared my wonder about the nut. They repaired it and I really have to say they did me right, they could have hit me for a full rebuilt unit (550.00), but charged less than half that. Got it back, and about 2 hours later I was cruising. What a joy to see that little needle actually touching red after months of not even yellow.

What's the point you ask? 1) Be very careful when you do a turbo to look for parts in every nook and cranny. My only guess is that this nut was hiding in the intercooler. Where it originated god knows.
2) Thumbs up for Gary and Co. at Swedish Dynamics.
