today i was driving around in a 1990 Iveco truck(fiat comercial vehicals)
it has a 3.9L turbocharged and intercooled inline 4 diesel that makes 280lbft of torque at ungodly low RPM's. well anyways the other day the exhaust brake got stuck closed and caused the truck to be very sluggish and i didnt know what the problem was so i drove it back to my car. As i was driving it the exhaust pressure built up way too high and seperated the flange between the turbo and the exhaust brake. so today when i fixed the exhaust brake and then drove it.....there was basicly no muffler. with no muffler the truck was still quiet due to the turbo muffling the combustion noises. HOWEVER.... i was able to hear the turbo quite clearly...it sounded really kick ass. You've all heard the sound....like on tractor trailers with big turbos that are idling or moving at high throttle/low rpm. imho this is a really awsome sound!

My question is....does a 900 turbo with a preformance exhaust/no exhaust allow the turbo to be audible such as this? Obviously the 900 turbo makes turbo noises under full boost. Similar to my 99 9-5 2.3 im sure. my 900 is a 1991 S so i cant experiment with ripping the exhaust off.

im guessing since the truck has a 4 inch downpipe and a big turbo this contributes to the turbo's noise making ability.

2 questions related to the truck that someone here might help me with since a mechanical person is a mechanical person.
the rpm guage doesnt work anymore on the truck. but since its a diesel how does it get an rpm signal.....there is no ignition system to tap into.

and:

does anyone here have a comercial drivers license? im 18 and im looking to try and get one. so far everything i have driven is under 26,000lbs.(the limit) and i am curious as to how difficult the test is.
