It's not that the auto has only 1st, 2nd, and 3rd -- rather, what it has, in comparison to the 5-speed, is 2nd, 3rd, and 4th -- you lack a strong first gear launch (in spite of all the engineers say about torque multiplication in the torque converter) and a 5th gear cruise. In my daughter's non-turbo, though, top gear in drive is about 3500 rpm at 65 mph. Its ratios are fine for her commute, because she has few stoplights and speed limits of 55 at the highest, but she still wants me to change it over to a 5-speed for her someday.
