I have a 92 900 turbo that had a fuel smell that drove me crazy for three months...wife even more.
although mine was different problem than yours, i learned a lot about diagnosing the problem. Gary at swedish dynamics helped me with this so call him if you need help too. 203 791-8826.
with the idle going up and down you may want to check all the turbo piping very very thouroughly (if yours is a turbo). any leak in hoses after the air mass meter will result in induction leak and allow fresh fumes into car. this will effect performance under turbo boost as well. yes, the charchol canister in the left front behind headlight will often have cracks in the hoses leading to it and is a common problem.
i doubt it is in the trunk as noted in last e-mail since idle is effected. I had a cracked gas tank that did not spill, but only fumed. it did not really effect performance at all though.
good luck. e-mail back and maybe i can give some more help.
