You can check some of the basics pretty darn close with not to much invested. Before plulling the rod's and main bearing, check the clearance with some plasti-gauge. If any clearances are high you will need to measure the crank (and the rod ends possibly) with a micrometer. After pulling the head, check for a metal wear lip at the top of the cylinder bore. No lip is a good sign. Take a piston ring and place it near the top of the bore about where the oil ring stops at the top of the stroke. Measure the end gap of the ring. push the ring squarley to the bottom of the bore. Re-measure the end gap. Divide the difference by 3, this will give a good idea what the taper is. If the taper is small, and the bearing clearances are close, its decision time. Do you want a "blueprint" engine (exact tolerances) or a re-build. New rings and bearings are cheap insurance, when it comes to honing/deglazing the cylinder, you can do it yourself, but a machine shop will give a better finish with an automatic machine. Don't use the rings over if you hone the cylinders. Polish the crank with ultra fine paper or cirocus cloth. As to how much wear is acceptable, that ussually ends up being how much you want to spend...
