Congrats on the new (to you) toy, and welcome back to SAAB ownership land :).
I don't know much about the diagnosis of the clutch, but I do know a little about the job. I hear it is pretty straightforward. The clutch is near the front of the car (whole engine in backwards thing), making it easy to access. Basically you remove the hood, some IC piping and a radiator fan. You might need a clutch spacer tool $20, or make your own. The clutch kit should cost less than $200, check out some of the TSN sponsors.
I have a 1988 900T as well and will be doing my clutch sometime in September (wanna have the car in tip top shape for SAABtoberfest :). From what I have read, it seems that the stock clutch is fine. Jeff Cunningham (http://www.twinsaabs.com) did adapt a 9000 clutch to his C900, so that may be of interest to you. My clutch hasn't really failed, but it has chattered, and the pedal is dis/engaging pretty high up. I am probably going to get mine from eeuroparts.com (good price+service). I am also in the CNY area (Cortland), and I would me more than willing to help if you need a hand.
