A/C low, check for leaks?

The A/C on my 92 900s is low on freon (if you look at the view thingy in the pass fender, you cant even see bubbles and whatnot, so its almost totally dry).
in any case, its an old car, and I don't know when it was last recharged. I called a shop today regarding a price on a recharge, and he said they would want to diagnose it for leaks, and would not give me an estimate.
Is there a good way for me to figure out if the system is leaking? If it doesnt leak, should it keep the freon indefinately? I have read about the soapy water test in the archives, but that is all I found.
If the system is already pretty depressurized, there probably isnt much leaking out at this point, so I don't know if anything would show by soapy water. Can I examine the seals on the system without taking it apart, or something like that?
thanks for your help,
dave
