Are you sure you're checking model years, and not build years?

Model year 1987 is VIN code 'H', 1988 is 'J' (10th digit)

Remember, more then half of the 1988 900s were built during calendar year 1987 (as indicated by the build date on the sticker in the driver's door jamb)

There was no change between 1986 & 1987 on brakes or wheels. But it all changed in *model year* 1988.
