your car sounded fine when you brought it in and suddenly began to make noise right after you left? sounds fishy to me! did they have the car up on a high lift for some sort of inspection? u can't really see the joint if you're just swappin' tires as fast as possible, which is presumably the speed they were doing it at. did they mention this problem to you before you left?

anyway, take a look at the inner boot: if it's intact & grease doesn't appear to have spilled out of it, the inner (tripod) joint's probably still good. still, may as well get a new boot from eEuro. & the right grease (search "more from gorper" & read the threads about it).

next look at the outer boot (and for evidence of tampering): if it's torn, then that's where you're noise is likely coming from - the outer cv joint. just replace that joint with one from eEuro (SKF is OEM; joint should come with grease & new boot). no need for a whole new axle.

also buy new axle nuts, which are single use only. u need a 32mm socket & some good leverage.

get a can or two of brake cleaner, some heavy dute (blue) paper towels, a box of latex gloves for this job - it's messy cleaning. be carefuly to be extra clean here - you might want to clean the heck out of the surrounding area before pulling the axle.

bentley has instructions; twinsaabs.com and townsendimports.com, too.
