Taken from a board sponsor, thesaabsite.com, comes the following:

"Thermo fan Switch failures can generally be identified by noting that the electric cooling fans are coming on late. The needle on the temperature gauge will be at approximately 3/4 toward the red. This is an indication that the resistance in the thermo switch is excessive."

Given that my fans come on late, i thought it would be the sensor that judges the temperature, but the same site suggests that sensor failure is rare. It's also been suggested thru board participants that my problem is thermostat related, so i'm going to order both parts. I'll change the switch first as it appears it's just "plug and play." If that fixes it, i'll just hold onto the thermostat until my next coolant system flush (and a good spare part to keep in the car!!). If it doesn't fix the problem, i'll replace the thermostat in the near future and see if that works better (and since the thermostat isn't at total failure, i'll keep that as the spare in an emergency situation).

I'll follow up after this weekend, assuming the parts come today, and let you know how it goes.
