shifter linkage clamp gone bad?

while adjusting the shifter linkage on my 85900T. had shifter locked in reverse.I twisted tell the nut could not go down any more, but it never tightend all the way. now my shifter is all loose. I think i may have over-tightend the rod clamp. bently says 30-35nm torque. did i make a mistake? somebody help.
