There is a product called Plasti-gauge to check the actual clearance, I never put a motor togeather without checking. It is a round piece of plastic you put on the bearing surface and then measure how much it flattens and spreads out when the bearing is tourqued. very accuratre to 0.0005". It will also indicate taper on a bearing journal as it will get widder if the front/back is smaller/larger. Before you get to this point you need to make sure your crank journals are round, a micrometer is needed for this. I have found production clearance differences between different brands of bearings. Personally I like to set clearances mid range(preferred) to the high end on the mains to allow for contraction/expansion and set the rod bearing towards the tight clearance to minimize play and shock loads. The bearing will wear before the crank, but once the thin lead film on the surface of the bearing is worn, the copper/aluminun core begins to wear the crank, and the crank will not wear in a round pattern, requiring a re-ground or new crankshaft.
